IN APRIL 1943, Red Schoendienst, a small 20-year-old infielder, reported for duty with the Rochester Red Wings, the Triple A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. Wings manager Pepper Martin was in the midst of reaming his underperforming charges when Schoendienst knocked on the clubhouse door.

Schoendienst was the second baseman on the Cardinals' 1946 World Championship team, and he piloted the Redbirds to a World Series victory over the Boston Red Sox in 1967 and another National League pennant in 1968.
