His career was marked by the drive for national unity, culminating in the Statute of Westminster (1931). He made concessions to the Progressives, and he was conciliatory towards French-Canadian demands.

Mackenzie King wrote his diaries by hand until the beginning of 1938. Afterwards, he dictated his diaries nightly to his secretary.
