Producer Charles K. Feldman had acquired the film rights to the novel Casino Royale, but he couldn't get along with Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman of Eon Productions. Rather than making a serious Bond film, Feldman opted to make a "parody" instead. I put "parody" in quotes because there's barely anything funny in this movie.
