Æthelbald, king of the West Saxons (d. 860), was second of five sons of King Æthelwulf and of Osburh, who was the daughter of one of Æthelwulf's officials and herself descended from the West Saxon royal line. Starting in the 840s, Æthelbald attested his father's charters as a king's son, and in 850 he received the rank of ealdorman.
Æthelbald (died 860) was King of Wessex from 855 or 858 to 860. He was the second of five sons of King Æthelwulf.In 850, Æthelbald's elder brother Æthelstan defeated the Vikings in the first recorded sea battle in English history, but he is not recorded afterwards and probably died in the early 850s.

Aethelbald (also spelled Æthelbald) ( 757) was a Mercian nobleman who became the King of Mercia. He brought Mercia back to a position of power not seen since the days of Penda and Wulfhere. Because of his authority and his use of the title "king of the gens Anglorum " his people began calling themselves English instead of Saxons, Jutes or Angles.
