George A. Akerlof ble født 17. juni 1940 i New Haven, Connecticut. Faren, født Gösta Carl Åkerlöf 1898 i Sverige, var kjemiker og arbeidet ved Yale University. Farens slekt kom delvis fra Dalarna og delvis fra Stockholm. Faren slo seg ned i USA etter at han reiste dit for å ta doktorgraden.
