Herbert Paul Brooks (August 5, 1937 – August 11, 2003) was an American ice hockey coach, best known for coaching the United States hockey team to a gold medal at the 1980 Winter Olympic Games in a spectacular event known ever since as the Miracle on Ice. The Miracle on Ice was Brooks' crowning achievement and legacy.
But Brooks certainly gained a measure of pride in leading the 1980 U.S. ice hockey team to the Olympic gold medal. Herb Brooks was small at 5-11 (1.80) and 168 lbs. (76 kg.), but played hockey for four years at Minnesota. Although cut from the 1960 Olympic team, he played on both the 1964 and 1968 U.S. Olympic teams, but neither team won a medal.
