Highest peak in southern California and the 7th most prominent in the contiguous US (8,294 ft prominence). Several trails lead to the broad summit of San Gorgonio Mountain. Most routes require well over 4,000 ft of elevation gain. San Gorgonio is the highest point in San Bernardino County.
San Gorgonio Mountain via South Fork Trail. Mount San Bernardino, on the other hand, sits 10,649 feet above sea level, providing hikers with a great view of Mt. Baldy, Mt. Geography. The wilderness is part of the eastern slope of the San Bernardino Mountains, with topography rapidly changing from low, rolling foothills and canyons to steep, rugged mountains. These mountains include Mount San Gorgonio and several other peaks over 10,000 feet (3,000 m). Elevations range from 2,300 to 11,502 feet (701 to 3,506 m).

San Gorgonio Mountain, however, was originally known as Old Grayback by locals until officially designated by the US Geological Survey on the original topographical map of the area produced in 1899. The 10,624-foot San Bernardino Peak provided the initial point in 1852 from which all Southern California was surveyed and subsequently mapped.
