Otto Dix is considered one of the most important representatives of the Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity) of the 1920s. He was born in Thuringia, near Gera, in 1891. After training as a decorative painter he studied at Dresden’s school of applied arts, the Kunstgewerbeschule, until 1914. During the First World War he served at the front.

Early Life. In December 1891 Otto Dix was born into the Generation of 1914. He was one of millions of late 19th Century babies who ushered in the 20th on the battlefields of the First World War. Dix was the eldest son of Franz and Louise. His father toiled in a iron foundry and his mother was a seamstress. Dix was exposed to art at an early age.
Im Museum Haus Dix in Hemmenhofen wird Zeitgeschichte lebendig: Über dreißig Jahre lebte Otto Dix mit seiner Familie hier auf der Höri. Dix, der zu den bedeutendsten deutschen Künstlern des 20. Jahrhunderts zählt, war 1933 von den Nationalsozialisten aus seiner Professur an der Dresdner Akademie entlassen worden.
Das Museum Haus Dix ist nicht barrierefrei, da es sich um das tatsächliche Wohnhaus der Familie Dix handelt. Das denkmalgeschützte Gebäude besteht aus drei Stockwerken, deren Räume nur über (teils steile) Treppen erreichbar sind. Der Ausstellungsbereich ist zum Teil mit Sitzmöglichkeiten ausgestattet.

Otto Dix malte viele Bordellszenen und dann auch noch so explizit – es war schwierig für ihn seine Kunst über Galerien zu verkaufen. Für das Gemälde „Mädchen vor dem Spiegel“ kam er sogar vor Gericht, weil das Bild als enorm unzüchtig empfunden wurde. Eine Zeichnung davon befindet sich übrigens in der Kunsthalle Karlsruhe. Auch dieses Museum hat also eine FSK 18 Abteilung.
