James Henderson Finlayson wurde am 28. August 1887 im schottischen Larbert bei Falkirk geboren. Nach dem Wunsch seiner Mutter Isabella und seines Vaters Alexander Finlayson sollte er einmal die Eisengießerei des Vaters übernehmen. Hierfür spendierten sie ihm ein College in Edingburgh mit anschließendem Besuch der Universität.
