In the beginning, Icon of Coil was just one man, Andy LaPlegua. He formed the project in 1997 around a logo he had already created. Sebastian Komor signed onto the project soon after it's creation, and Icon of Coil released their first single, "Shallow Nation", in 2000. Icon of Coil then signed with Norwegian record label Tatra Records.
