James Thomson (c. 11 September 1700– 27 August 1748) was a Scottish poet and playwright, known for his masterpiece The Seasons and the lyrics of “Rule, Britannia!”. Scotland, 1700–1725 James Thomson was born in Ednam in Roxburghshire around 11 September 1700 and baptised on 15 September.
James Thomson was a Scottish poet and playwright best known for his blank-verse poems celebrating nature and for the words to "Rule Britannia." He was part of a group of early 18th-century poets who sought to break away from the highly stylized, formal verse of the late 17th century.
Thomson’s ‘The Rainbow’ contrasts Newton’s science with a boy’s awe, celebrating the pure joy found in nature’s transient beauty. Moist, bright, and green, the landscape laughs around. James Thomson was an 18th-century British poet who is remembered for a few select poems. He’s one of the sixteen Scottish poets on the Scott Monument.
