  7. Author Oates generally does make her readers work for the meat and pleasure in her works and I don't think "Sleep, Death, etc." is any exception. On the surface at least, this is the tale of what happens to a large (two parents and five grown children) and seemingly normal family when its patriarch and magnetic center is killed in an incident of police brutality.
