    Provenance. The papers of William Cabell Rives, U.S. senator and representative from Virginia, were deposited in the Library of Congress in 1928, 1929, 1940, and 1941 by Mrs. Helen M. Rhinelander and converted to a gift in 1946. Some materials were transferred to the James Madison Papers in the Library in 1958.
