Lie, jüngstes von sechs Kindern eines Dorfpfarrers, besuchte 1857–1859 eine private Lateinschule in Christiania und studiert bis 1865 an der dortigen Universität Mathematik und Naturwissenschaften.

He first attended school in Moss (Kristianiafjord), then, from 1857 to 1859, Nissen’s Private Latin School in Christiania. He studied at Christiania University from 1859 to 1865, mainly mathematics and sciences.
