John Fletcher was a prolific playwright, who not only wrote his own plays, but also had a hand in numerous plays written in collaboration with other authors. Sometimes, it is nearly impossible to tell who wrote what, and various plays are ascribed at various times to Fletcher alone, Fletcher with Beaumont, Massinger, Shakespeare and so on.

John Fletcher. The following is an imagined account from the life of John Fletcher, who collaborated with William Shakespeare on many plays, including All is True (Henry VIII ) and The Two Noble Kinsmen. Fletcher was born in Rye, Sussex, England, and baptized on Dec. 20, 1579. When not quite 12, John was apparently admitted to Bene’t (now Corpus Christi) College, Cambridge. From 1596 until 1607 nothing is known of him. Fletcher’s name is first linked with Beaumont’s in Ben Jonson ’s Volpone (1607), to which both men contributed encomiums.
