Before starting the Barnum & Bailey Circus, P.T. Barnum took over the American Museum in New York City in 1842. Over the next two decades, he attracted tens of millions of visitors to see such “curiosities” as Chang and Eng , conjoined twins connected by a ligament below their breastbones, and General Tom Thumb , a man only 25 inches tall who proved to be Barnum’s most profitable exhibit.
