Tell Me a Riddle is a collection of four short stories written by Tillie Olsen, and first published in 1961. The four short stories, "I Stand Here Ironing," "Hey Sailor, What Ship?," "O Yes," and "Tell Me a Riddle," touch on issues of individuality, conformity, social pressures, stratification, feminism, motherhood, authorship, and racism.
Her recommendations of lost women authors were gathered as “Tillie Olsen’s Reading Lists” in Women’s Studies Newsletter (1972–73) and inspired the Feminist Press’s reprint series. She also released more fiction: the story “Requa I” appeared in 1970 and was reprinted in Best American Short Stories (1971).
