She died from paralysis of the heart due to organ rejection roughly three months after undertaking her fifth and final sex-change operation in June 1931.
Einar and his wife Gerda Wegener (née Gottlieb), artists who hailed from Copenhagen, were living in Paris at the time of the surgery, having emigrated there in 1912.
