Estudió física, matemáticas, astronomía y filosofía y su actividad docente (filosofía) se desarrolló en las ciudades de Halle desde 1887, Götingen desde 1901 y Friburgo desde 1916 hasta que se jubiló en 1928. Murió el 26 de abril de 1938 y dejó muchos escritos inéditos.
