Ciano was born in Livorno, Italy on 18 March 1903. He was the son of admiral and WWI hero Costanzo Ciano (for which service he was given the title of Count by Victor Emmanuel III) and his wife Carolina Pini. His father, nicknamed Ganascia (“The Jaw”) was a founding member of the PNF and reorganized the Italian merchant navy in the 1920s.

The diaries of Galeazzo Ciano, Italy’s Foreign Minister between 1936 and 1943 and Benito Mussolini’s son-in-law, are among the most important testimonials of the Fascist period. To this day, however, no critical edition which would satisfy scientific standards is available for this indisputably important source.
