Carla Thomas Biography. Carla Venita Thomas is an American singer known as the “Queen of Memphis Soul.” Thomas is most known for her performances for Atlantic and Stax in the 1960s, which included the successes “Gee Whiz (Look at His Eyes)” (1960), “B-A-B-Y” (1966), and “Tramp” (1967), which she performed with Otis Redding.

Carla Thomas had been Stax Record's first home-grown star, her 1960 single "Gee Whiz" helping get the Memphis-based record label off the ground. Over the next few years Stax developed its own unique sound and identity, recording more hits with The Mar-Keys, Otis Redding and Booker T & The MGs .
