Jefferson died in Chicago on December 19, 1929, at 10:00 a.m. from what his death certificate states was "probably acute myocarditis". For many years, rumors spread that a jealous lover had poisoned his coffee, but a more realistic explanation is that he died of a heart attack after becoming disoriented and lost during a snowstorm.
