Als die Witwe Iris überfallen wird, kommt ihr der eigenbrötlerische Koch Stanley zu Hilfe. Zwischen den alleinstehenden Mittvierzigern beginnt eine wechselhafte Freundschaft. Binnen kurzem bemerkt Iris, daß Stan ein Analphabet ist.
