Eaglesmith was een van de negen kinderen van een streng gelovig boerengezin in het zuiden van Ontario. Eaglesmith herinnert zich dat hij in zijn jeugd op een van twee plekken was: aan het werk op de boerderij of op weg naar de kerk.
