Nach der Geburt von Mary Godwin starb sie im Kindbettfieber. William Godwin heiratete kurze Zeit später Mary Jane Clairmont, die zwei außereheliche Kinder mit in die Ehe brachte. Das jüngere von ihnen ging unter dem Namen Claire Clairmont als kurzzeitige Geliebte von Lord Byron in die Literaturgeschichte ein.
Mary Jane Godwin, formerly Clairmont, née de Vial (1768-1841), English translator and bookseller. She was the second wife of philosopher and novelist William Godwin, and together they ran the M. J. Godwin Co. Juvenile Library bookshop and imprint.
Jane Shelley ließ die sterblichen Überreste von Mary Wollstonecraft und William Godwin vom Friedhof in St. Pancras nach St. Peter’s in Bournemouth überführen, was nahe zum aktuellen Wohnort von Percy Florence und Jane Shelley in Boscombe lag. Mary Shelley wurde dann auf dem Friedhof von St. Peter’s entsprechend ihrem Wunsch zwischen ihren Eltern begraben.
Mary Jane Godwin died at home in London on 17 June 1841, and was buried in St. Pancras churchyard beside her husband. When the remains of William Godwin and Mary Wollstonecraft were moved to the Shelley family vault in Bournemouth, with the development of the nearby railway, Mary Jane's body was not reinterred.
