The College is named after William Van Mildert (1765 - 1836), the last Prince Bishop of Durham. An Englishman of Dutch descent, he was instrumental in the founding of Durham University in 1832 and his castle is the present University College. His portrait hangs in our Ann Dobson Hall. Living in Van Mildert is great fun! Our accommodation blocks are mixed between fresher students and finalist students. This creates a community atmosphere in college, with first-years and finalists socialising together. One accommodation block, Tunstall, is exclusively for finalist students. Most second years, and some finalists, "live out" of college in and around Durham City.

Deerness. Deerness contains 97 single ensuite rooms. All rooms have television points and an ensuite shower/WC. Each floor has a lounge area and a kitchenette. There are also laundry facilities available on the ground floor. The majority of the rooms in this accommodation block are occupied by postgraduate students.

It provides you with membership of the MCR which is a community of over 200 postgraduate students, all of whom are members of Van Mildert College.
