Described by our students as ‘the perfect size’, with around 600 students we’re slightly smaller than the average Oxford college. Outlook We’re proud of our almost 700-year history, but are always looking for ways to make Oriel even better for future generations.
Oriel College has beautiful historic buildings dating from the 14th to the 21st Century. Oriel attaches great importance to the academic and social integration of graduates into the life of the college. There are regular symposia, organised by the Middle Common Room (MCR), where graduate students can present and discuss their research.
Soon after the foundation in 1326 the ‘College of the Blessed Virgin Mary’ was given a property called ‘La Oriole’, on the site of the present Front Quadrangle, and gradually the college came to be called by that name.
