Simon Shaheen came from Tarshiha, a Christian village in the Galilee region of northern Israel. He began playing the oud (also, ud), a pear-shaped, nonfretted Arabic lute, at age 4. Under the tutelage of his father, Hikmet Shaheen, a renowned teacher and composer of Arabic music, Simon performed his first public improvisation at age 6.
Simon started playing the Oud at 4, followed immediately on the violin as well. After receiving his bachelor degree in music education and performance from Tel Aviv University, he immigrated to NYC to attend Manhattan school of music. Simon presently lives in NYC, and teaches at Berklee music school in Boston.
Simon Shaheen. A Palestinian, born in the village of Tarshiha in the Galilee in 1955, Shaheen’s childhood was steeped in music.
