Clyde Lensley (not "Lensey") McPhatter was born in Durham, North Carolina on November 15 1932. His parents were (per the 1940 census) George McPhatter, a carpenter, and Beulah Newton, a stemmer in a tobacco factory. His family was heavily rooted in the church, with his father also a minister and his mother an organist.
