Working out of Toronto, Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks cut the LP Ronnie Hawkins in 1959, and with Fred Carter, Jr. taking Jimmy Ray "Luke" Paulman's place on lead guitar, they cut another LP, Mr. Dynamo, the next year, both of them recorded on the Roulette label. He subsequently moved to Canada (becoming a permanent resident in 1964).

He enjoyed some success in the US in 1959 with the singles “Mary Lou” and “Forty Days” (a cover of Chuck Berry’s “Thirty Days”), which netted him television appearances in the US on The Dick Clark Show and American Bandstand .
