Mary Gwendolin Byrd, Marquise des Monstiers-Mérinville (née Caldwell; 1863–1909) was an American philanthropist and socialite.She funded the foundation of the Catholic University at Washington, D.C. in the 1880s, but had renounced the Roman Catholic faith by 1904.
William Caldwell moved to Richmond, Va., where he sought solace in Catholicism and donated generously to Catholic charities, the encyclopedia said. He paid for the construction of the four-story, $84,000 Saints Mary and Elizabeth Hospital at its original location at 12th and Magnolia streets in Louisville, and supplied a $50,000 operating trust for it.
