Apr. 2024 · Mahmoud Darwish (born March 13, 1941, Al-Birwa, Palestine [now El-Birwa, Israel]—died August 9, 2008, Houston, Texas, U.S.) was a Palestinian poet who gave voice to the struggles of the Palestinian people. After the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, Darwish witnessed massacres that forced his family to escape to Lebanon.
Darwish lived for many years in exile in Beirut and Paris. He is the author of over 30 books of poetry and eight books of prose, and earned the Lannan Cultural Freedom Prize from the Lannan Foundation, the Lenin Peace Prize, and the Knight of Arts and Belles Lettres Medal from France.
