Guy Pearce stars as a British preacher caught up in 1830s Māori wars in Lee Tamahori’s ( Once Were Warriors, 1993; Mahana, SFF 2016) sweeping historical drama.
The film is solid but not astounding, certainly not destined for the all-time Kiwi classic status of Tamahori’s earlier feature Once Were Warriors (I didn’t realise he directed The Convert until the credits rolled), but worthwhile checking out all the same, and, given the current landscape of Māori-Crown relations in New Zealand, it’s rather prescient (especially the final scene).
