Winner of the Palme d'Or prize at Cannes that year, it ran to a full four hours, and so its theatrical life was limited.

They do not have a sexual relationship, but by the end of the movie the relationship of the model and artist is more intimate than any two lovers. Emmanuelle Beart is the model. She is naked throughout the movie and she is a beautiful woman.
