William Starke Rosecrans (September 6, 1819 – March 11, 1898) was an American inventor, coal-oil company executive, diplomat, politician, and U.S. Army officer. He gained fame for his role as a Union general during the American Civil War.
William Starke Rosecrans was born on September 6, 1819 in Delaware County, Ohio. William’s father, Crandall Rosecrans, served under William Henry Harrison in the War of 1812. Although he had little formal education as a child, Rosecrans was regarded as studious and intelligent.
