A nemesítésre Kolozs vármegyében került sor 1657. június 21-én. [2] Miklós apja, Horthy István ( 1830 – 1904 ), [3] a magyar főrendiház tagja, egy 1500 holdas birtok tulajdonosa, igen szigorú ember volt – még saját gyermekeivel is. 1857 -ben kötött házasságot dévaványai Halassy Paulával ( 1839 – 1895 ).
