In seinen späteren Lebensjahren wandte sich Runge stärker der Physik zu (Messung von Spektrallinien in der Optik) und widmete sich auch ganz speziellen praktischen Problemen: So entwickelte er Ortsbe-stimmungsverfahren auf See und im Ballon und löste Probleme aus der Festigkeitslehre. Carl Runge starb 1927 im Alter von 70 Jahren in Göttingen.
