25. Feb. 2023 · Tatsumi Hijikata was a revolutionary figure in the world of dance and art in Japan. Born in 1928 in the Akita region of northern Japan, he moved to Tokyo in 1952 to pursue his passion for dance. Initially studying tap, jazz, flamenco, ballet, and German expressionist dance, Hijikata's interest soon turned towards the unconventional and he created the form of dance known as Ankoku Butoh.
Butoh. Butoh ( japanisch 舞踏, butō ), eigentlich: Ankoku Butō ( 暗黒舞踏, dt. „Tanz der Finsternis“), ist ein Tanztheater ohne feste Form, das nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg in Japan entstand. Es wurde von Tatsumi Hijikata und Kazuo Ōno ins Leben gerufen.
Butoh is a Japanese avant-garde dance form developed in 1959 as a reaction against Western influence in Japanese politics and culture. Butoh's founders, Tatsumi Hijikata and Kazuo Ohno, have created a dance movement that is growing in popularity in the USA, influencing psychology, fashion, music, art and architecture.

Hijikata premiered his first choreography in 1959, an adaptation of Mishima Yukio’s 1952 homoerotic novel Kinjiki ( Forbidden Colors ).
