  3. Bal Gangadhar Tilak was born July 23, 1856, in Madhali Alee (Middle Lane) in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, into a middle class family of the Chitpavan Brahmin caste. His father, Gangadhar Ramachandra Tilak, was a Sanskrit scholar and a famous teacher who began his education at home while he was still very young.
