He was born in Riga in 1909, and spent his early childhood there and in Andreapol before moving with his family to Russia, and then to England.

He is regarded as one of the founders of the discipline now known as intellectual history.
Isaiah Berlin wurde 1909 in Riga geboren, zog mit seiner Familie 1915 nach Russland und kam schließlich 1921 nach England. In Oxford lehrte er später Philosophie. Isaiah Berlin, philosopher of liberty, wrote in 1988: 'To force people into the neat uniforms demanded by dogmatically believed-in schemes is almost always the road to inhumanity. We can do only what we can: but that we must do, against difficulties'.
