Pops Staples (b.December 28, 1914, Winona, Mississippi, USA – d.December 19, 2000, Chicago, Illinois, USA) was an American Gospel and R&B musician. He was an accomplished songwriter, guitarist and singer and patriarch and member of singing group The Staple Singers , which included his daughters Cleotha Staples , Mavis Staples , Yvonne Staples and son Pervis Staples .
The Staple Singers were an American gospel, soul and R&B singing group. Members [ change | change source ] Roebuck "Pops" Staples (1914–2000), the founder of the family group, formed the group with his children Cleotha (1934–2013), Pervis (1935–2021), and Mavis (b. 1939).
The Rhythm & Blues Foundation honored Staples with a Pioneer Award in 1992, and in 1998 he was awarded a National Heritage Fellowship by the National Endowment for the Arts. The Staple Singers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999. Pops died on December 19, 2000.
