24. Mai 2019 · England's historic counties were established about 1,000 years ago as the result of various conquests and royal decrees. In the late 1800s, new counties were superimposed on the old ones for administrative purposes, but the historic counties were never actually abolished. The layering of these two systems occasionally creates a bit of confusion.
