Die Ermordung der beiden, von denen es in der Presse tags darauf hieß, Liebknecht sei auf der Flucht erschossen und Luxemburg von einer aufgebrachten Menge getötet worden, riefen auch im Bürgertum Empörung hervor. Die Künstlerin Käthe Kollwitz hielt die Ermordung mit ihrem Gedenkblatt "Die Lebenden dem Toten" mahnend fest.
