4. Apr. 2023 · The victim was a 36-year-old Red Army artillery lieutenant named Yakov Dzhugashvili. There was nothing remarkable in the death of a Soviet soldier in Nazi captivity. In the first 12 months of Adolf Hitler’s invasion of the USSR, an estimated 2.8 million Red Army prisoners had succumbed to starvation, exposure and disease while in German hands.

Growing up in Georgia, far from the capital of the USSR, Yakov Dzhugashvili had a colder relationship with his father, a fact which he will keep throughout his life and which we will observe in the following.
Stalin was categorically against Yakov's first marriage and this provoked a major row between father and son. Added to this was Dzhugashvili's personal tragedy — the death of his infant daughter.
