Juni 2024 · When The Act of Killing was released in 2012 it brought international attention to a dark chapter in Indonesian history: the politically motivated mass killings of one million people between 1965 and 1966. The ones who perpetrated these killings have never been held accountable; in fact, they still hold power in Indonesia.

It's such a haunting documentary. I think it's because it got so honest and intimate with the death squad members. There's also a sequel they made that was about how an optometrist is affected by the history and is inspired by The Act of Killing to confront the death squad. I haven't seen The Look of Silence but really want to.
