The grand duchy originally formed from the Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt in 1806 as the Grand Duchy of Hesse (German: Großherzogtum Hessen).

Frankfurt’s status as a free city allowed it to have independent governance and a degree of self-rule. Was Berlin a free city? Berlin was not considered a free city in the historical sense.
