Campbell was the son of Colin Campbell, 6th Earl of Argyll. In 1594 he commanded royal troops at the Battle of Glenlivet against Catholic Rebels, especially the Gordons of Huntly.

Vor 4 Tagen · The third Duke of Argyll, as Lord Ilay became in 1743, occupied Argyll House until his death without legitimate issue in 1761, when both the title and the house passed to his cousin, John Campbell, the fourth Duke. The house subsequently passed to the fifth Duke, who died in 1806.
