My understanding is that after the Battle of the Wilderness, Lee expected Grant to retreat or rest as almost every other Union commander he previously faced did after a bloody battle but Grant kept up the advance and carried on towards Richmond eventually leading to the Siege of Petersburg and finally to Appomattox Court House.
