25. Aug. 2024 · The song first appears in Behan's first play 'The Quare Fellow' (1954) about the execution of a prisoner by hanging. ('Quare' means strange in Dublin, without any sexual connotation, although there's also a gay character in the play known as 'The Other Fellow').
