The history of Georgetown University spans nearly 400 years, from the early European settlement of America to the present day. Georgetown University has grown with both its city, Washington, D.C., and the United States, each of which date their founding to the period from 1788 to 1790.

Georgetown University is a private Jesuit research university in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C., United States. Founded by Bishop John Carroll in 1789, it is the oldest Catholic institution of higher education in the United States and the nation's first federally chartered university.

By and large, however, Georgetown was a southern college in the antebellum period. Of its alumni who served in the Civil War, more than four-fifths were Confederates. The war nearly closed the College. The student enrollment fell from 313 in 1859 to 17 in fall 1861.
We offer nine fields of study, and are nationally and internationally recognized leaders in transregional, global, and comparative history, with particular strengths in World, Atlantic World, Pacific World, international diplomacy, inter-societal relations, and global environmental history.
